Why can't I re-melt aluminum bales directly?

At the furnace, the inside melts differently from the outside, and the trapped air oxidizes the aluminum, generating losses in the form of dross. Shredding breaks up the bale into a loose fraction that melts uniformly, with minimal losses.

Yes. The loose fraction allows the separation of contaminants: magnetic separation extracts the iron (caps, metal labels), and eddy current separation and other methods refine the aluminum fraction. This produces a clean aluminum, free of ferrous contaminants, with maximum value at re-melting in the furnace.
